Anti-Perspirant vs. Deodorant
What is the difference? Anti-perspirant is designed to stop you from perspiring. It uses aluminum in order to do that plus a host of other chemicals and fragrances to mask any smell that emerges from your armpits. For many people it doesn't work and they still get body odour after a few hours of wearing their aluminum filled (even at full prescription strength!) anti-perspirant (this was me before I started to create my own natural formulation! Ouch that stuff burns badly at 20% aluminum chloride!). Deodorant doesn't stop you from sweating because your body NEEDS to sweat to regulate body temperature and to eliminate all the toxins (from food, environment, personal care products hmmmmm like the toxins in anti-perspirant!) from your body. When you stop your body from sweating, you are trapping in all those toxins right where you need your body to be "clean and free" from them near your breast tissue and your lymph nodes. The delicate area of the armpit that can put you at risk for developing breast and other cancers so think about what you are putting on them and straight into your blood stream and organs.
What is that penny smell?!
Ever gone for a run, hot yoga or workout and you smell pennies under your armpits? Guess what that is? It is the aluminum and other chemicals in your anti-perspirant mixing with the bacteria in your sweat and having a funky reaction that smells like copper pennies. It could also be your diet impairing proper digestion, yeast imbalance, or a liver that needs to detox.
What to expect when you switch from anti-perspirant to natural deodorant?
Well first of all, expect to be healthier! If you make one change to your personal care routine to be "cleaner" then start with your deodorant. You may actually find you sweat (more than before) and that is ok. It is your body detoxing and the sweat should not smell if you are using an effective natural deodorant. Your body may go through a detox period of 2-3 weeks where you will think it isn't working for you, you may develop a rash or redness, or experience some other unusual issues. If you develop a rash then stop using the deodorant until it clears up and instead just use organic virgin coconut oil. It is anti-bacterial and will help to soothe the underarms.
